Interesting–VADM Aucoin was going to be reassigned next month anyway. I wonder if Congress will let him retire as a three star, since they have to confirm retirements in the grade of 0-9 and 0-10. Whether any of this is fair or not is, of course, another story. I keep thinking about Admiral Nimitz–when he was an ensign (back when people were ensigns for a long time), he ran the USS Decatur, a destroyer, aground, and was convicted at a court-martial for hazarding a ship. Back then, not necessarily a career-ending move–but now? Maybe skippers don’t trust junior officers enough to let them try something and learn from errors, or they don’t get taught well because the skippers are not well-versed in seamanship? I was lucky when I was a lieutenant in a medium boat company that my company commanders (three in two years) left me pretty much alone so I could learn how to be in charge–I made a lot of errors, but I didn’t make them twice. As a company commander, in contrast, I was micromanaged by both my battalion commanders–I was also the only company in the battalion–we were activating equipment storage and maintenance companies in northern Germany then. At any rate, I think the Navy has a number of issues in this area, and firing a three-button is not really going to fix anything.
