I never have understood Naval Enlisted Ranks, apparently I shan’t to ever worry about that again. In apparent break with 200 years of tradition the U. S. Navy is going to change it Enlisted Rank System. Next thing you know they will get rid of buggery at the high seas (hat tip to Cheece and Chong)

Growing up as a Navy junior, I (had to) become familiar with the Navy rating system at a pretty early age. In a way, what the Navy is doing is sort of like what the Army has done with officers–reduced the primacy of branch so that people can be assigned in a more flexible way. I will miss the old references. But then again, when I was in the Army, I was a transportation officer who served in it seldom, having commanded a maintenance company and later been XO of a multifunctional support battalion and then division material management officer. Yet I always identified myself as TC, even when I was teaching English at USMA. BTW, glad to see the article you linked include a reference to The Sand Pebbles, one of my favorite military books and film. I have a long story about my destroyer skipper dad messing up a day of filming for the movie, but I’ll let that pass for now.

Jake Holman’s last line: “what the hell happened? What the hell happened?” And the (very) young Candice Bergen–what could be better? I’ve watched it too many times. David Attenborough’s first film role. Filmed in Taiwan–the San Pablo was built for the film and came to an untimely end: http://www.thesandpebbles.com/san_pablo/demise_sanpablo.html
