Lots of wishful thinking in Noonan’s piece, and a bit of a revisionist history of Eisenhower’s reluctance to run for president. Third party candidates never get more than 20%–Ross Perot may hold the record for such candidates–the traditional party structure, with its existing donor networks and built-in sources of people for ground campaign work. He’d also have to get past the fact that both people on the left and right are suspicious of former military people–the “man on a white horse” syndrome. General Mattis is extraordinary, but anyone who proposes a military man for public office needs to read Coriolanus.

Interesting, but it’s not going to happen. I’ve seen him in action, and it is impressive. But he’d be a horrible President, it’s not how he operates. Fun to imagine, though.
